I love this quote from a book of manners, written by the Italian Giovanni Della Casa. This edition was published in English in 1576. The extract comes from the fascinating website Shakespeare’s England recommended by Thom White.

When thou hast blown thy nose, use not to open thy handkerchief, to glare upon thy snot, as if you had pearls and Rubies fallen from thy brains.
