This year I have enjoyed re-reading Ann Leckie’s Ancillary Justice trilogy. I was also very pleased that I passed them on to my older daughter and they devoured the trilogy too.
I previously read these books five years ago and wrote about them here and my opinion is unchanged. Iain M. Banks’ earlier novel Matter seems like a clear ‘upriver’ source for Leckie to draw on but, perhaps controversially, I think I will declare Leckie the better writer!
Re-reading Banks’ science fiction a few years ago I was struck with the realisation that he writes action, battles and technology better than he does people. Leckie writes people and their conversations, concerns, interests and sense of humour in a completely credible way and this is a delight.
