Yesterday I received the Ajoto Pocket Pen I backed last year through Kickstarter. This acquisition was something of an experiment, as I already consider the Prometheus Alpha pen my ideal for that role.
For those unfamiliar with Ajoto, their current lineup features elegantly minimal pens designed for appearance and balance rather than portability. I’ve owned several and particularly cherished the lightweight ebonite model that I misplaced a few years ago.
The new Pocket Pen represents a significant departure from Ajoto’s established design language. It embraces a technical aesthetic with exposed screws and deliberate engravings that go beyond the elegant branding of their earlier offerings. Each pen displays its serial number and proudly declares its British origin. The overall design philosophy clearly speaks the language of ‘EDC’, bearing a striking resemblance to a premium folding penknife but it’s clear that a lot of thought has gone into the design of the details of this pen.
So what’s my verdict?
While this newcomer won’t be dethroning the Prometheus pen currently clipped to my pocket, it’s an impressive writing instrument in its own right. The design functions very well as a portable pen - perfect for tossing into a pocket or bag when you need something reliable for quick notes. Its all-metal construction promises to develop an appealing patina with use. Though the rectangular shape might not be ideal for extended writing sessions, it feels comfortable in my grip. One unexpected bonus: it’s wonderfully satisfying to fidget with!
